Infrared Security Camera - See Into Those Dark Areas
The ability to see in low or very dimly lit areas is exactly what an infrared security camera is designed to do. They take surveillance into a whole new realm by allowing you to monitor in all types of lighting situations. Even more good news is that IR cameras are very affordable and easy to use.
What Are the Features of Infrared Surveillance Cameras?
Resolution: This is measured in lines - meaning how many lines on a TV screen. The higher the number, the better. 250 is adequate. A high resolution picture is 480 lines and will produce a sharp and clear video. VGA resolution can be found in the best models.
LEDs: The number of LEDs determine how far your camera can 'see'. 12 IR LEDs provides effective night vision range over 30 ft. 30 IR LEDs provides a night vision range of 50 feet.
Lens: This is measured in mm just like a camera you use for photography. A lower number means a wider angle or wider view as opposed to a telephoto lense that will narrowly focus on an object far away. You'll commonly see security camera lens in the 3.6mm - 5mm range.
Weather Resistant: If you want to use your camera outside, look for a model that's designed for outdoor use. If you live in extreme climate conditions where the temps drop very low in the winter, but sure to get a camera that can withstand the cold.
Vandal Resistant: For businesses especially, having your cameras vandalized is a big problem. There are models of security cams that are especially made to withstand tampering. They're designed for indoor or outdoor use.
Audio: You'll find models that have no audio or audio that goes one way whch means you can hear as well as see. Higher end models will also have two way audio allowing you to speak through a built-in speaker.
Wireless: Wireless security cameras are the easiest to install. They also cost a bit extra for the convenience.
Color: Many night vision cameras will have a color picture during the day and switch to black and white at night while in the IR mode. This can sometimes lead to a clearer picture. However, full color mode is available for nighttime use.
